Winstrol is the most widely recognised trade name for the anabolic steroid stanozolol. Stanozolol is a derivative of dihydrotestosterone, chemically modified to markedly amplify its anabolic (tissue-building) activity while cutting its androgenic effects down to a minimum. Among commercially available steroids, it shows one of the strongest separations between anabolic and androgenic action. On top of that, stanozolol cannot be aromatised into oestrogens.
Winstrol is the second most popular oral anabolic steroid, surpassed only by Dianabol (methandrostenolone). It is favoured in particular for promoting muscle growth without the water retention — which makes it highly useful to dieting bodybuilders and competitive athletes chasing a leaner, more defined look.
Structurally, stanozolol is a modified form of dihydrotestosterone. The modifications are two: a methyl group added at the 17-alpha position (which shields the hormone during oral ingestion), and a pyrazol group in place of the normal 3-keto group on the A-ring. That substitution puts stanozolol into the heterocyclic steroid class. Viewed as a 17-alpha methyldihydrotestosterone derivative, the A-ring tweak noticeably boosts anabolic strength while trimming androgenicity further still.
