Is propionate the right choice for a first testosterone cycle?
On pure pharmacokinetics, yes — a bad reaction (aromatisation, acne, prostate issues) can be shut down fast. In practice most experienced users still steer newcomers toward enanthate because of the injection frequency and the PIP risk. For a six-to-eight-week starter cycle aimed at learning how your body responds, propionate works fine — as long as the injection technique is solid.
Does propionate aromatise more than enanthate or cypionate?
Per milligram of free testosterone, no — the ester doesn’t change the aromatisation rate. What differs are the peaks. Someone injecting 100 mg propionate every second day sees a much sharper testosterone spike shortly after the shot than someone getting the same weekly total as a single enanthate shot. Those short peaks can produce noticeable estradiol activity — so it “feels” like propionate aromatises harder, when the actual explanation is the kinetics.
Do I always have to use the same injection site?
The opposite — consistent rotation is mandatory when you’re doing four to five shots a week. Classic rotation between the glute (ventroglute), vastus lateralis, deltoid, and for experienced users triceps or pectoralis. Never twice in a row into the same muscle.
What happens if I miss an injection?
Given the short half-life, the serum level drops noticeably inside about 48 hours. A missed shot produces a real trough — fatigue, low drive, dampened libido are palpable. Catch up the shot as soon as possible, then back into the normal rhythm; no double dose to compensate.
How long should a propionate cycle run?
Six to ten weeks is the typical range. Longer is possible but rarely done because of the mounting suppression and the cumulative injection-site irritation. Anyone planning 12 weeks or more often switches to enanthate in the last weeks to cut the injection frequency — then starts PCT two weeks later.

Testosterone Propionate: the short ester, its PIP tax, sensible dosing and the legal fine print
The shortest ester the old pharma industry ever pinned onto the testosterone molecule — and, paradoxically, the one that splits the forum consensus the hardest. Some lifters call propionate the most controllable way to run a supraphysiological cycle. Others refuse to draw the stuff into a syringe ever again, because the post-injection pain can wipe out a full training week.
Regulatory picture: testosterone propionate as a stand-alone finished drug has been discontinued in most Western pharmacies. What still circulates under that name comes from a handful of international approvals (Turkey, Iran, the Balkans), some compounding pharmacies, and — in the overwhelming majority — the UGL segment. Buying without a prescription is a criminal act under US and UK controlled-substances law; in organised sport testosterone has been banned at all times for decades.
The molecule, the depot, the release
Formally: the C17β-propionate ester of testosterone. Molecular formula C22H32O3, molecular weight 344.48 g/mol, CAS 57-85-2. In plain terms: at position 17 of the testosterone skeleton the hydroxyl group has been esterified with a propionic-acid tail — a three-carbon fatty acid. The modification changes nothing about the intrinsic action; it changes everything about the pharmacokinetics.
The ester makes the molecule more lipophilic. In an oily injection base a depot forms inside the muscle, from which the compound slowly diffuses into the bloodstream. Once there, non-specific serum esterases cleave the propionate off. Free testosterone is what binds the androgen receptor.
Ester chain length sets the release speed. For comparison, carbon counts: propionate 3, enanthate 7, cypionate 8, decanoate 10, undecanoate 11. Longer chain, more lipophilic, slower release. Propionate with its three carbons sits at the fast end of the spectrum by design.
Pharmacokinetics — the Behre reference numbers
The reference paper comes from Behre et al. (1990) and is cited in practically every testosterone-ester review since:
Elimination half-life: about 0.8 days
Peak serum level: roughly 14 hours after an IM shot
Mean residence time: about 1.5 days
Clinically relevant duration: 2–3 days
In hypogonadism substitution the derived doses land at 25–50 mg every one to two days. In bodybuilding the doses run one to two orders of magnitude higher — without pharmacokinetic validation in that supraphysiological range.
Why propionate still competes with the longer esters
You might assume an ester requiring an injection every second day has no place in an era of once-weekly cypionate. It does, for three practical reasons.
Fast control. Realising 100 mg every other day is too high a dose? You can course-correct within a few days. On enanthate or cypionate the same adjustment takes one to two weeks thanks to the long half-life. For athletes who work toward a specific dryness or juggle estradiol readings, that short response window is a real argument.
The fast release also serves as a “kickstart” for cycles built around a longer ester. In the first two to three weeks of an enanthate cycle — before steady state — propionate supplies the missing testosterone availability.
End-of-cycle behaviour matters too: the serum level drops off within days after the last shot, letting you start PCT earlier. Enanthate typically forces a two-week wait; with propionate, two to three days is enough.

A common protocol reported by a US-forum user: 100 mg every other day IM, rotating between glute and vastus lateralis. The first two to three weeks walking was awkward enough to force leg day off the schedule — textbook PIP. After the tissue adapted, the local swelling faded and the training routine came back.
On the injection side: 100 mg/ml is the standard concentration, occasionally 50 mg/ml (kinder for sensitive users) or 200 mg/ml (more painful, space-efficient). Needle gauge 23G–25G at 40–70 mm, depending on the muscle and depot size. Rotate injection sites religiously to avoid fibrosis.
Where propionate really pushes back: PIP
Post-injection pain is the elephant in the room. Short ester in an oil base — cottonseed or sesame most often — provokes a local inflammatory reaction at the injection site. Redness, warmth, tenderness, sometimes swelling that lasts days. Some UGL preparations also burn during the shot itself, which usually points at a bad formulation or straight-up contamination.
Practical countermeasures the forums have worked out: warm the oil to roughly body temperature, push it slowly over 30–45 seconds, take a warm bath after the injection, ibuprofen for the harsh local reactions. Recurring severe PIP in the same site is a signal to switch to a thinner needle, rotate wider, and — where possible — swap the product.
Systemic side effects
The side-effect profile matches every other testosterone ester. The important ones:
Acne, seborrhoea, occasionally accelerated hair loss in genetically predisposed users
Rising hematocrit — a phlebotomy is often recommended once you cross 52–54%
Prostate enlargement with a rising PSA reading
Aromatisation to estradiol with the associated risk of gynecomastia and water retention
Suppression of endogenous testosterone production — permanent without PCT is a real possibility
Cardiovascular side: blood pressure creeping up, lipid profile drifting (HDL down, LDL up), erythropoiesis running hot. A CBC plus liver, kidney and lipid panel every four to six weeks on a supraphysiological dose isn’t paranoia — it’s baseline hygiene.
Grey-market quality is a chapter of its own. A Czech investigation documented “Propionate 200” ampoules whose actual active content was way off the label. Counterfeits with wrong concentrations are the norm rather than the exception in UGL testosterone.
Legal picture
In the US, testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. In the UK, it’s a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act. In the EU, it’s prescription-only across all member states. Testosterone propionate specifically has been withdrawn as a licensed finished product in most Western pharmacies — the manufacturers moved to enanthate and cypionate for TRT decades ago. That leaves compounding pharmacies, international imports and UGL as the practical supply routes.
For criminal exposure, thresholds vary. Under US federal law, unauthorised distribution of a Schedule III substance is a felony with up to 10 years imprisonment on a first offence. Personal-use possession is a misdemeanour with a maximum of one year. UK law penalises supply with up to 14 years; possession sits lower. Both jurisdictions weigh quantity and intent heavily.
In sport: WADA Prohibited List, S1.1 (Anabolic Agents), banned at all times. The 2026 WADA clarification makes explicit that all esters of prohibited anabolic compounds are automatically covered. Detection is via LC-MS/MS, with isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) backing it up when a natural-origin explanation has to be ruled out.

In Sustanon 250, propionate is one of four ester components (30 mg propionate, 60 mg phenylpropionate, 60 mg isocaproate, 100 mg decanoate). It supplies the rapid rise inside the first 48 hours after the shot; the longer esters carry the plateau.
Where it comes from — and why that matters
Western retail pharmacies do not carry testosterone propionate as a finished product anymore. Compounding pharmacies with a legitimate prescription can source it; international pharmacies (Iran, Turkey, the Balkans) also stock it. The overwhelming majority of the market runs through UGLs with variable quality. Batch numbers, an independent analysis certificate, clean concentration labelling, laser engraving that doesn’t smear when you wipe it — those are the baseline checks before the first shot. If you can send a sample to an independent lab like Anabolic Lab or SIMEC, do it before PIP is lingering for a week, not after.
What we carry: testosterone propionate from Magnus (Testosterone Propionate 10 ml/250 mg, and the Testo Ripped 250 blend with propionate, trenbolone acetate and drostanolone propionate), Pharmacom (Pharma Test P 10 ml/100 mg), Spectrum Pharma via the USA-domestic supply (Testo P 100 mg/ml), Prime (Testosterone Propionate 10 ml/250 mg) and Genetic Labs (Testogen 10 ml/100 mg). Other brands or concentrations can be sourced on request — lead time depends on the manufacturer and the current batch situation.
