Anavar (oxandrolone) at 20–40 mg/day for 6 weeks has the mildest side-effect profile and the lowest liver load among the 17α-alkylated orals in common use. Proviron is even easier on the liver but doesn’t build meaningful muscle — it’s a supporting compound, not a starter cycle in itself.
Do I really need TUDCA on an oral cycle?
Not “need” in a life-saving sense. TUDCA at 500 mg twice daily has published data showing reduced liver-enzyme rises under oral anabolics. NAC at 600 mg twice daily is the second common addition. Whether the reduction translates to meaningful long-term protection isn’t proven — but for a small daily investment across the cycle length, the risk-reward math points at using them.
Can I run orals without any injectable testosterone in the cycle?
Physiologically bad idea. Orals suppress the HPG axis just like injectables. Running an oral-only cycle means running low-T through the entire cycle length, which produces the classic fatigue, killed libido, poor recovery pattern — and blunts most of the muscle-building effect you’re chasing.
How much liver stress is "too much" during a cycle?
ALT and AST at 3× the upper limit is the community warning line. At 5× the upper limit, stop the cycle regardless of how good the training is going. Elevated bilirubin (jaundice, dark urine) requires immediate cessation and a doctor visit — cholestatic hepatitis is the mechanism most severe oral-steroid liver injuries take.
Why does Winstrol wreck my joints?
Stanozolol has anti-glucocorticoid activity that depletes joint fluid and cartilage cushioning. The effect stacks with training load and is usually palpable by week 3 of a 4–6 week run. Fish oil, hydrolysed collagen and — if training-critical — glucosamine or MSM helps but doesn’t eliminate the issue. If joints are a persistent problem, another oral in this section is probably a better fit.

Oral steroids: the 17α-alkyl trade-off, which orals still make sense and where the liver line sits
Oral anabolics survive first-pass metabolism in the liver because they’ve been chemically modified — specifically, 17α-alkylation, an added methyl or ethyl group at the 17 position of the steroid nucleus that blocks the hepatic enzymes from breaking the molecule down before it reaches systemic circulation. The pharmacology solves one problem and creates another: the same modification that makes orals bioavailable is what makes them hepatotoxic.
That trade shapes every practical decision in this category — dose, cycle length, stacking, when to use them at all and when to reach for an injectable instead. What follows is a walk through the sub-families in this section and how to think about picking between them.
Anavar (oxandrolone)
The most mild-mannered oral in common circulation. Low-to-moderate anabolic strength, minimal androgenic effect, no aromatisation. The two selling points that keep it in constant use: it’s mild enough for extended cycles (up to 8 weeks isn’t unusual) and it’s one of the few anabolics with a documented use pattern in women’s cycles at 5–10 mg/day. Downside: a real drop in HDL cholesterol at higher doses (60–80 mg/day), plus the same 17α-alkyl hepatic footprint any oral carries.
The historical Anavar (Searle) went off the market decades ago, opening the door to the biggest counterfeit market of any oral in the catalogue. What you buy is essentially never Searle Anavar — it’s a generic oxandrolone from various manufacturers, and the label may or may not match the contents.
Winstrol (stanozolol)
DHT-derivative, non-aromatising, prized for the “dry”, vascular look it produces at the end of a cut. The oral form is 17α-alkylated (as are the injectables — Winstrol is one of the rare compounds where the injectable is also hepatotoxic). Where it hits hardest is joints — chronic joint pain and stiffness are the classic Winstrol complaint after a few weeks, driven by the anti-glucocorticoid activity depleting joint lubrication. Stack with fish oil, hydrolysed collagen and — if training-critical — glucosamine as a baseline.
Best used in the final 4–6 weeks of a cutting cycle, not year-round.
Dianabol (methandrostenolone, D-bol)
The classic bulking oral, in circulation since the 1950s. Aromatises, produces water retention, gives fast strength gains and a corresponding “pumped” look. Two application patterns: as a 4-week kickstart to the front end of an injectable cycle (bridging the ester ramp-up), or as a bridge across a chronic plateau. Aromatisation means an aromatase inhibitor stays in the toolkit throughout use.
Dose window: 20–40 mg/day, split across the day because of the short 4-6 hour half-life. Beyond 40 mg the liver load rises disproportionately fast — anyone running 80 or 100 mg/day is chasing the last few percent of effect at multiples of the liver risk.
Oxymetholone (Anadrol, A50)
The most anabolic oral in the catalogue, and also the harshest. 25-tab and 50-tab packs of 50 mg tablets are the usual formats. Enormous rapid strength and mass gains — 8–12 pounds in the first two weeks isn’t rare. What comes with it: aggressive water retention, mood changes (“Anadrol rage” is a real reported complaint), blood-pressure spikes, harsh lipid changes and the heaviest liver stress of any oral in common use. Cycle length is essentially capped at 4–6 weeks, and even then only for advanced users with a plan for the come-down.
Turinabol (chlorodehydromethyltestosterone, Tbol)
Dianabol variant with an added chlorine and a modified structure that eliminates the aromatisation. That makes Turinabol a cleaner-looking gain profile — no water, no estrogen management needed — but pharmacologically less potent per milligram than plain Dianabol. Cycle-friendly at 30–60 mg/day for 6–8 weeks; strong reputation for lean quality, fair reputation for hepatotoxicity.
Small historical footnote: Turinabol was the East German state doping programme’s default oral in the 1970s and 1980s, which is where the anecdotal safety data mostly comes from. Not a reason to think it’s safe. A reason to know it’s been observed in supraphysiological use for a long time.
Halotestin (fluoxymesterone)
Not a mass-builder. Halotestin’s use case is aggression and strength in the last week before a strength competition or a fight — powerlifting meets and combat sports are where it shows up. Minor anabolic effect, high androgenic effect, no aromatisation. Also one of the most hepatotoxic orals in the catalogue, which is why the use pattern is measured in days, not weeks.
Proviron (mesterolone)
An oral DHT-derivative that occupies a niche of its own: it doesn’t build muscle in any meaningful way, but it binds SHBG (sex-hormone-binding globulin) and frees up more testosterone from the bound pool. Practical effect: paired with a testosterone cycle, Proviron amplifies the free-testosterone reading without adding to the total dose. Also frequently used for its libido effect and its mild anti-estrogenic action.
The 17α-alkyl group is missing in Proviron, which means it doesn’t carry the same liver load as the other orals in this section — one of the few orals users run at 25–50 mg/day for extended periods without the usual concerns.
The liver conversation
Every 17α-alkylated oral raises ALT and AST measurably during use, sometimes into the 3–5× upper-limit range. In most users these values normalise within weeks of stopping. In some they don’t. The single most-documented severe outcome — cholestatic hepatitis with bilirubin in the hundreds — is rare but reported for every oral in this section at some point.
Baseline hygiene: liver panel before starting, at week 3–4 into the cycle, and 4 weeks post-cycle. TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid, 500 mg BID during oral use) has some evidence for hepatoprotection. NAC (N-acetylcysteine, 600 mg BID) is common in the same slot. Skip acetaminophen/paracetamol entirely during an oral cycle — the combined liver load is the fastest path to problems.
Cycle-length rules that keep coming back
Dianabol, Turinabol, Anavar — 6–8 weeks max
Winstrol — 4–6 weeks, joint pain is the limiter
Oxymetholone — 4 weeks max, extended out to 6 only with tight bloods
Halotestin — days, not weeks, and only for specific competition timing
Proviron — extended use is fine given the non-17α structure
Stacking two 17α-alkylated orals at once (Dianabol + Anadrol, for example) doubles the liver load without doubling the anabolic effect. Almost never worth it.
Legal picture
Every oral anabolic in this section is a Schedule III controlled substance under US federal law and a Class C drug in the UK. Prescription-only across the EU. Purchase without a prescription is illegal in each of those jurisdictions.
WADA Prohibited List, category S1.1 (Anabolic Agents), banned at all times. Detection through LC-MS/MS on urine picks up the metabolites reliably; the detection window for oral turinabol in particular is famously long (metabolite M3 has been detected months after last use).
