Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It was engineered specifically to give a strong separation between anabolic and androgenic effects, with no meaningful oestrogenic or progestogenic activity. Set against other oral steroids, oxandrolone is on the milder side — both in side-effect profile and in wider hormonal disruption.
The compound was built to drive strength and lean muscle gains without the usual drawbacks of stronger androgens. Anabolic assays put oxandrolone at up to six times the anabolic activity of testosterone on a milligram-for-milligram basis, with markedly lower androgenicity.
That profile makes oxandrolone a favourite among cutting-phase bodybuilders and competitive athletes — particularly those in speed or anaerobic sports — where lean mass without fat or water retention is the priority.
Structurally, oxandrolone carries a distinctive modification at the second carbon atom: a carbon is swapped for an oxygen, which gives the compound its “ox” prefix. That seemingly small structural change is thought to drive much of the enhanced anabolic potency compared with its parent hormone, dihydrotestosterone.
